Halloween is coming…and all of the sugar laden candy and treats that comes with it. There’s nothing wrong with a little splurge now and then, but if you have a relationship with candy like I have with the Reese’s Pumpkins it can definitely turn from an innocent little splurge to a full blown nightmare. I’m here to help you make sure you’re not the house that gets eggs thrown at it for not having your light on, but also to make sure you don’t feel like you’re getting chased by a guy in a burnt fedora carrying buckets full of Milk Duds. Maybe you have kids and want to have some treats or not feel left out. Perhaps you enjoy Halloween and want to celebrate it with a bit of candy. There’s nothing wrong with that. No reason to feel guilty or deprive yourself. But, do you want to compromise all the hard work and progress you’ve made by taking it too far? Probably not. Follow these five easy tips to make sure you don’t wake up feeling like a pumpkin the day after Halloween.

1. Wait until the last minute: Don’t head to Sam’s Club two weeks before Halloween and load up a flatbed cart full of Snickers. A wise man, Dr. John Berardi, states his First Law of Food – “If a food is in your house or in your possession, either you, someone you love, or someone you marginally tolerate will eventually eat it”. Wait until Halloween day or the night before to fill your candy supply. If it’s not there the temptation won’t be there either.

2. Buy your least favorite candy: If there is a candy or two that you don’t really care for, buy those for your trick or treat selections.

3. Go natural: If you’re feeling hungry and that big bowl of candy is calling your name, have a piece of fruit instead. Of course fruit is more nutritious, but it will also fill that hunger void better and keep you feeling fuller longer. If you’re the type that doesn’t enjoy a lot of exercise, envision how much exercise you’ll have to do in order to offset those candy calories.

4. Keep the Sugar Babies hidden: If you’re sitting there waiting for trick-or-treaters to arrive and you think you hear those Sweet Tarts whispering “eat me” from the bottom of the bowl, put that candy outside and go do something else. Let the kids walking by just have at it. This way you don’t have to be bothered with the constant ringing of your doorbell also. This is especially good if it’s getting close to the end of the night and you still have thirty-nine pounds of candy left from your flatbed cart, which ties in with my last tip.

5. Get rid of it!: I know…it’s like throwing away money, right? But, there are plenty of people looking for mass candy donations that would appreciate it. Your waistline would appreciate it too.


These tips still might be hard for some to follow, but if you can just stick to a few of them you will have a better chance of keeping those Milk Dud cravings at bay, and the nightmarish Halloween hangover away.
